For anyone considering a heat pump, here is an alternative to the usual ground source or air source options. Could be particularly interesting for care homes and other buildings with a high year round heat load.

The system consists of a water cooled photovoltaic panel in which water is warmed when the sun shines, and which can act as a large area heat exchanger when the sun is not shining. Annual SCOP should be significantly higher than an air source heat pump as the heat source is often warmer than ambient air, requires no air circulation fans, and defrost cycles are unlikely to be necessary.
